BONESCRAPER

The site is in the central business district of Istanbul. Around 70’s; warehouses, factories were on these plots. However as the city started to expand, the factories moved to the city boundaries and the plots started to host skyscrapers. The plots are connected with the main boulevard. On the side of the plots; 2-6 story height apartments exist. The empty plot that we choose is 22m x 215m. The surrounding skyscrapers go up to 261m height.

In this plot boundary, the bonescraper locates itself being respectful to the surrounding environment. Therefore some restrains are applied to this boundary. This restrains will allow the building to escape from the enormous shadows of the neighbor buildings and let the light pass through itself to the buildings around. The porous structure also provides strength to the structure.

The bonelike structure starts to secrete from 3 sources according to these rules. The rules are coded to the DNA of the structure. It passes through phases till it fills the entire boundary. This phasing system provides the owner of the building to be built in as many phases as they like. This secreting follows the liquid behavior.

The cores are spread through the whole building. It also holds the installations and elements like stairs. The puffed parts of the structure holds recreation spaces. Entrance lobby, social areas, restaurants and sport facilities. The main circulation through the building is maintained through 3D elevators. These elevators are like parasites and move around the façade with their arms. They pick and leave people from/to the holes on the façade.

On this bonelike structure, the housing units nest. They connect to the available slots of the structure. These units have different volume but they all have panoramic views of the city.

Haaz Design and Art Gallery is a space that combines furniture, design objects and art. The owners Özlem Avcıoğlu and Murat Patavi picked a new location for their new concept . This location is in Tesvikiye district – that is the most popular shopping district of Istanbul. Being the ground and first floors of an attached apartment, the space needed a renovation. The area was 200m2 with two stories.

The main architectural approach was to produce seperate articulations of one space and give a familiar and cosy feeling at the same time. Materials like wood and stone are used. The idea was to keep the space as flexible as possible; to let event planning or displaying products anytime.

A mixture of black steel and led tubes on the facade attract attention from the street. The ground floor is reached through 5 stairs that are also display for the products. The floor continues with solid oak wood herringbone that is a traditional housing floor material in Turkey.

Haaz graphics are used not just on the company cards or packing papers but also on the walls by using them as wallpapers, sliding panels and steel concealing panels. The cantilevered steel stairs prevent blocking the view from the street and forward people to the first floor.

Upstairs, the old cladding on one of the walls is removed. Beneath the last layer – that was wallpaper- some newspapers belonging 70s are found. (This was a technique to hold the wallpaper). That last layer was also removed, and at last, the residues of layers form a new kind of wall.

Cable conduits take place beneath the walls, providing flexibility of presentation of lighting products. Mexicana river gravels are used inside the cable conduits.

Some of the unfinished carved shelves are great elements to display the antique pieces.

Context: Designed for people who seek for some quiet time & people who like to entertain. Feeding the vitality of the beach and hosting meditative and memorial spaces. Not by separating them; but by forming unexpected encountering points.

Flocking & Spatial Logic: Taking their reference from spatial relations, attractor points are generated. Basic cells come together with the guidance of attractor points that have varying forces and evolve to form the pier. The unit populates by extracting itself from the borders. The behavior of flocking both forms the structure and embraces the spaces.

The evolved structure leads different kinds of spaces both turned inward and outwards. While the inner parts form cosy spaces, the outer parts serve as shades, showers, changing rooms, jumping decks, venders on the beach and jumping & tanning decks, observation terraces around the structure. The structure permits interlocking of both parts. This provides a stimulative interaction between programs.

The structure is semi-permeable for the sea and beach. Complexity of the structure is solved by dividing it to the simplest unit: triangle. And given a “Y” component, the whole structure is solved as a whole.

Project site is in Akatlar, Istanbul. Akatlar is in between Levent and Etiler; the contrast of dense road structures of TEM and Ugur Mumcu Boulevards and loose dwelling texture of itself. How could this in-between situation project itself on the site…?

A new texture is tried to be formed from intersection friction and superposition of different layers. Physical and visual interactions between inside and outside are provided, thus; inside becomes extension of the outside.

Floor transforming into wall and wall transforming into ceiling… and a feeling of delusion. Probabilities coming up from the union of different layers.

Paths: are vertical and horizontal circulations. When the paths are formed, the space should call its visitors to explore itself, but while doing this, visitors should not fee lost. So, they could either choose the main axe or the sub-paths. Another element that will encourage orientation is light.

Porosity: These pores let a visual connection through different levels. At the same time they could turn into various functions.

Light: The structure builds itself avoiding shadows of its neighbors. While it is solid on the north side, it gradually becomes porous and transparent to the north. This porous structure continues with and increasing rate.

Program: Multi Purpose Hall, Cafe and the studios authorize entrance and exit. Basic particles are attracted around those entrances and exits therefore emphasize them visually. Also the particles are used as urban furniture hence they increase the usage of those spaces.

As we take a look at the Kurucesme shore line, idle spaces grab our attention. One of them is called Kurucesme Arena; which is only open during the concerts which are organized 3-4 times a year.

While there is a concert, problematical acoustics and the incorrect positioning of the stage stands out. Because the slope is down to the sea, it becomes really hard to see the stage from some positions.

To prevent the stand-by space situation, music school, music library and cafes are added to the program. Improvements in acoustics are made by repositioning the stage. Fragmentations in the whole are conclusion of my search through viewing different perspectives and vistas on the coast line.

Water and shores are a part of daily life in Istanbul. However, some coasts are turned into private areas because of rent; therefore, the public spaces are either closed or allocated to upper class people. Kurucesme is this kind of space. It holds 3 car parks and 2 night clubs. On the coast, the only place that lets recreation and access to the sea is Kurucesme Park.

Music School: It has a system that questions the relationship between the public and private spaces. Study rooms and social spaces are transparent; on the contrary practice and ensemble rooms are solid. An optimum space for the optimum spread of sound energyhas tried to be formed.

Music Library: The library which is embedded into ground in order to break the wall effect. The roof of the library serves as an observation terrace. To prevent the free-watching of the concerts roller panels in the lamps are unrolled before the concerts.

Cafes: Cafes are placed in order not to prevent each others sights. They also allow pass-through from the adjacent Kurucesme Park - when there is not a concert. The service areas and WC that are needed at the concerts will be permanently build instead of the dis-mountable.
